Reviving City Vanadzor
From now on Vanadzor is the very place to visit in Armenia third largest city in Armenia and is supposed to be frequented by travelers as much as Dilijan, Gyumri or Goris, but it is not almost at all.
But Vanadzor has a great potential to offer an off the beaten track tour to its visitors.
Vanadzor (formerly Kirovakan) was one of the industrial giant cities in the entire Soviet Union.
Vanadzor’s chemical industries, production of carbide, ammonia, acetate silk, corundum, and plastic resin. Other industries include the production of precision tools, chemical machinery, textiles, and foodstuffs.
Our first stop will be at the Mechanical Engineering factory that is still functioning with Soviet time machinery. Unlike the rapid development of new technologies all around the world, time has stopped here as it was during Soviet times despite its slogan “Moving to the Future”. We will have guided tour with the general engineer who will show us around different sectors of the factory, tell the history about its foundation and talk about the secrets of its survival until nowadays.
After wondering in the local market we are going to have homemade lunch welcomed by one of the renowned artist’s family in Vanadzor.
Then we will stop at the monument of “26 Baku Commissars” one of the rarest monuments that exists until now which is devoted to the Bolshevik governors of short-lived Baku Soviet Commune in 1918.
In Soviet times there was no sex, respectfully there was no rock music.
In 1990s first rock bands started to form in Armenia and the ones formed in Vanadzor were among the most successful ones. Thus it is recoganised as the birthplace of Armenian Rock Music. It is still in progress and younger generation are more and more interested in art and mainly in music. We are going to visit the rehearsal space of one of the bands, get acquainted with the band members, enjoy their performance and just have a relaxing time.
We are going to visit and see a poisonous lake which was has been formed for the waste of the Chemical Factory in Vanadzor. Do not worry, it is safe we are going to see it from respected distance.
